Sexual Assault Statistics

One in four females will be sexually assaulted in their lifetime.

Of male sexual assault victims, one in six has been sexually assaulted by
the age of 18.

Male victims represent 5% of reported sexual assaults.

Sexual assault is one of the violent crimes least reported to law enforcement.

50% of all sexual assault victims are 12-24 years of age.

57% of sexual assaults occur on a date.  60% of sexual assaults occur
in homes.

70% of people with developmental disabilities are sexually assaulted.

78% of all sexual assault victims know the offender.

84% of rape victims do not report the incident to the police.

Less than 2% of reported sexual assaults are false.

The National Victim Center estimates that 683,000 forcible rapes (ages 18 and over) occur each year in the U.S.  This is 1,871 a day, 78 an hour and 1.3 each minute (National Crime Victimization Survey, 1996).
